I was having my dinner and enjoying the new series of Watchdog when I casually checked my emails. This is when I found out that I am a finalist in the BritMums Brilliance in Blogging 2019 Awards in the Fresh Voice category! AMAZING.
It’s a PUBLIC VOTE – please please please vote for me here.
Well, I cried. I am an incredibly emotional person anyway but this news was plenty enough to tip me over the edge. This is the first time that Gluing Cheese has been shortlisted or nominated for anything since I launched the site earlier this year. It’s something which I definitely didn’t ever expect to happen – most certainly not within the first few months.
Blogging is brilliant
There’s so many reasons why I blog. It started out as a way for me to document and remember TJ’s life. It was just a personal record which I started on a very terrible WordPress site back in 2016 when I was on maternity leave. I then joined Kiki Blah Blah and loved loved loved writing for them. Then, when that all changed, I spent a long time thinking about whether I could do this on my own. I didn’t know if I had enough stuff to say which people would want to listen to. Also, I didn’t know if I had the physical capacity which it would demand to get something like this off the ground. Not least of all, I didn’t know if I had the technical skills, either – which I still sort of don’t. But, I do have a lot to say.
Blogging and the social media which goes with it has a reputation for being narcissistic and just to seek attention and validation. That’s not why I do it. I do it because I truly believe there’s solidarity in adding your voice to an online community of people experiencing the same things as you. That could be parenting or anything else – it’s just about commonality. I seek comfort in social media when I am struggling with a handover, or a hectic day of parenting, or the ‘break’ which comes with co-parenting. I hope others will scroll through my Instagram and be comforted too. That’s when and how I will know that I am doing my (totally unpaid) job right.
BritMums are ace too
BritMums are doing some incredible work to give people like me a platform for their creativity in a variety of forms. There’s some amazing finalists alongside myself in the Fresh Voice category as well as all across this year’s nominations. The winners are announced on 10 October 2019. I will, of course keep you posted on what is to come. Fingers crossed!
THANK YOU to all those who have voted for me … if you haven’t yet here’s the link again!
